30 vs 50 amp electricity

What can you do without trouble with only a 30 amp connection? Run a Splendide washer/dryer? If you have a 15000BTU a/c unit, can you use it at all with a 30 amp connection? Other considerations?

  • You can run any high load item on 30 amps, sometimes two. You can run four+ high load items on 50 amps.
  • Actually, Royb, there is a lot more added with a 50 amp system. With a 30 amp system you have 1 leg of 30 amps. With a 50 amp system you have 2 legs with 50 amps. So you have over 3 times the amperage with a 50 amp system.
  • Like stated above you can run alot on 30 amps. Mine is 50 amps but in most state parks you will find only 30 amps. In summer I always run the air and water heater without problems. If using other heating appliances I simply flip off the water heater for a while, water will stay hot several hours. I only have one 15k AC in the 5er.
  • As stated, running one 15K AC is no problem. And you can run a number of other things at the same time. We have done it often.
But occasionally we overdo it and trip the park breaker. Just a matter of learning how much you can run at one time. AC, water heater on electric, toaster oven, electric space heater, hair dryer, and those kind of things use quite a bit of electricity. Worse thing that will happen is it will trip the park breaker and you will have to reset it and try again with less stuff operating.
  • I have found that I can run 15k ac continously and one heat generating appliance such as a hair dryer, or toaster or microwave without a problem (along with tv, lights, etc). Can't run all the above and ac if electric water heater is running. I always try to make sure CG 30amp plug and cord are not hot to touch.

There isn't too much more added with a 50AMP trailer system. Usually the big deal is the second Air Conditioner.

Also since more folks use the 30AMP connections the camp ground pedstals are more often pretty much wore out so using the 50 amp connection is much cleaner.

If I had a bigger trailer I don't know if I would add the 50AMP service to gain a second air conditioner or not. ALot of folks will install a low profile 9K BTU or smaller second air conditioner and run it direct from the camp ground 20AMP pedestal connection???

I always run my oil filled 1500WATT 120VAC heaters from the camp ground 20AMP connection when I can.

Kinda depends what you want to do camping I guess...

  • You can run a lot on 30 amps. A/c, washer/dryer. I have a 40 foot MH and sometimes I only have 30 amp. Even run 2 A/C's at once.

If I was buying a rig 50amp would be my choice. Then you can run everything at once. Coffee pot, elec heater, Micro, water heater on and on.
