30x40 or 20x60 shop to store 5er

We are building a new home and the HOA allows us to add a metal shop building no larger than 1200 sqft.

Trying to decide what dimensions to use for the shop. The lot is much deeper than it is wide so a 60ft deep shop would work fine. My 5er is 30ft long and if it were ever replaced it would be something of similar length. In a 30x40 I couldn't leave the truck hitched up and close the door which is why I'm considering other sizes.

The main purpose of the building will be to store the 5er, a 16' utility trailer, and a small amount of lawn equipment.

Who prefers the narrow/long option? I had been thinking a 30x40, but am now not sure it's the best option.

  • Congratulations of which ever you decide. Wish I had that problem. Around here RV's are like a red headed step child. Practically nothing is allowed.
  • You might consider a second garage door on the side towards the back. Even a small golf cart size door would help with getting to stuff in the rear.

For the big door I would install a hangar type. Hinged across the middle that folds outward as the bottom comes up. A local farmer has them on his barns. They provide an extended, covered work area for the farmer. I installed a 16' roll up so as not to have inside tracks, but I've wished I'd thought of the hangar type.

Good luck on your decision. Just remember, what ever will be better than nothing and it will never be big enough.
  • Looks like everyone agrees to go long/narrow.

My concern is ability to get the RV and the 16' utility trailer in and out without always needing to move something to get the other one. At 20' wide the 14x12 door will take up enough space so as to not allow 2 doors.
  • 20 x 60. Couldn't close the door on my rig in 30 x 40. Don't forget to leave room to open the slides inside the garage.
  • I too like longer/deeper. Can leave hooked up if you want. But make sure wide enough to open the slides inside if you want or need to.
A variance for 10 more feet would be awesome. I like the storm shelter bait but that may already be a building code now in your area for your new home. ???
  • Try to get a variance from the HOA and make it 30X60, sounds like they don't care that much about metal buildings so would it be a problem being 10 ft wider. Maybe an underground storm shelter under part of it large enough to share would be good bait for the variance. Do they have a height restriction?
  • 20 x 60. Lots of room for your fiver and truck. I have a 40 x 60 and its nice just to leave them hitched for a quick job. My shop door is off set to one side it gives me lots of room on the other side for other stuff.
  • Narrow works for me, since you can figure that the RV is basically 10' wide, you'll still have lots of room for the lawn equipment along the sides.

I like the idea of being able to just back in, and park both units...especially if you don't normally use the truck all the time.
One of our fears, is that people will notice that the RV is missing, so figure that we're gone, making the house a target for thieves. If you have it parked inside ( I wish we could), I'd do just that....and why un-hook, if you don't need to?

A regular double door at the side, would allow you to get lawn equipment in/out, without having to move the RV..

Send pictures when you're done...it sounds awesome!
