35gal fuel station only takes 26gal

Fuel station on my hauler is advertised as 35gal. I always felt like it was hitting near empty on the gauge sooner than it should but wrote it off as the gauge being off. Last year I took measurements of the box did the calculation/conversions and sure enough 35gal on paper. Last trip out the tank ran empty to the point my genny died and would not pump out the nozzle. Filled it back up this week and could only get a little over 26gal in the tank. Any ideas?

  • Also look thru sales material for magic words to the effect of:

"THE MANUFACTURER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO MAKE CHANGES AND/OR IMPROVEMENTS IN DESIGNS & DIMENSIONS WITHOUT NOTICE AND WITHOUT INCURRING OBLIGATION.

    Or:

"reserves the right, without notice to the Customer, to (a) change the specifications of any product, (b) improve a product in any manner that OEM deems necessary or appropriate and (c) discontinue the manufacture of any product".

    Or:

"The Company reserves the right to change these terms and conditions at any time without prior notice."

(Just when you thought you got what you paid for...oops, they even have a disclaimer for that)
  • Is the pickup tube at the bottom of the tank? Is there a drain plug that can be removed to see if the missing 9 gallons are in there?
  • Check the vent hose and make sure it is above the top of the tank.
Also check that the fuel filler is above the top of the tank.
