3rd A/C in larger 5th Wheels

I notice several mfg's have the option of including a 3rd A/C unit in the living area (most are the front living models). Living in the hot climate down south, that may be something to consider.

I do have a question about this option. Can all 3 units run at the same time on 50 amps?

I never use the single ac unit we have but I find it almost unbelievable that 3 units are needed to cool such a small space. How big are the a.c. units used in say a 3000 square foot home?

Why on earth would he do that? I consider the 3rd AC a "spare" in case one of the others stops working. Although I do have 2 fantastic fans too, so maybe he had none?

  • I can run all three on mine while on 50A with no restrictions. One is a 15K heatpump, the other two are 13.5K AC only. Mine are three separate thermostats.
  • We have three on our Landmark. We can run all three with a single requirement we don't turn on the stacked dryer. The Power Management system works fine for all other loads and will shutdown devices as needed. For some reason the dryer doesn't play as nice and will pop the pedestal breaker a lot of the time. I haven't looked into the why i just live with it, not a big deal. Especially since we seldom run all 3.

Unlike the DRV above all three are on separate thermostats.
  • I have three AC's on my DRV. They are all 15k units and I can run them all on 50 amp power. They are however all run through the same thermostat, which is smart enough to not try to start more than one compressor at a time. If all three are controlled separately/individually then it could cause problems if the compressors try to kick on at the same time, even on 50 amp power (because two of the AC's have to be on the same line - line 1 or line 2 - of the 50 amp power panel).
  • Howdy!

Our toy hauler 5er has 3 AC units but you can only run two at a time.

  • I have three on my Riverstone and have run all three at the same time with no problems on 50 amp. I have a load management system on mine but it lets all A/Cs' run when plugged into a 50 amp service.
  • Many units have a load center that drops one a/c - max two running but that depends on the power source. It will behave differently if you have 50A shore power, or generator or 30A shore power etc.

But at 50A, there's no reason you couldn't run three - there's enough power.

Depends on which load manager you get.
