4 or 5 on tire replacement

On our last vacation we had 2 of our BF Goodrich Commercial TA's go bad. They were about 3.5 years old. I was in Les Schwab territory and all they had was Toyo's so I bought 2. I'm ready to finish the process but I curious about the spare. Is the norm to buy 5 new and hopefully the spare never hits the ground or can I get away with putting a much cheaper tire on the spare.

Thanks Ray

  • The spare tire is to get you out of trouble, not into more. Unless you are willing to use the spare as a stop gap - just long enough to limp down the road to the next town to get the blow out replaced, I would probably replace all 5.
  • I would keep the newest or best shape tire as a spare, until it reaches 7 years old then replace it. I would love to use Toyo's on my car, you probably want them too, they have a great reputation with the big rig truck drivers.

Normally I would say replace all at 7 years old, but if you have been replacing them over time, so no need to replace the young tires.

  • I replace 5 at a time. Tires age regardless of use and sooner or later you will need that spare to get you somewhere
