Well over 100,000 towing miles behind me on my 2wd dually. Been stuck with the trailer twice. Got ourselves out each time. Once in a snowed in CG. Second time on a muddy hay field. Both situations were far from normal.
If the driving is going to be no snow & no off road, other than maintained gravel, there is no good reason for the 4wd other than to be the tough guy in the CG. 4wd is an added expense that most seldom use. I do keep a tow line onboard in case I need the help of one of those 4wd tough guys but I have never needed it.
Now, if you are a farmer, live in a snow area or regularly go offroad for the fun of it, then by all means 4wd is the way to go.
