I'm retired and I full time. Maybe that makes a difference. I'm treating 4x4 as insurance.
I bought my dually with 4x4 and Ford's version of posi-trac in the rear end. I have only used 4x4 a few times - uphill slippery grass, going very slowly up a winding gravelly road to a campground, once while maneuvering in a CG that had just got deluged and had standing water, etc. Just enough times that I liked having it available. Was it absolutely essential ? Probably not.
I did not get 4x4 for snow. I do not expect to be in a situation that involves snow.
If you decide on the 2x4 model, I would make sure it has the posi-trac option, or some kind of locking differential. Even with duals, I would still want that option. It can make a big difference.
I'm not sure I would want a 2x4 truck without posi-trac.
