40 ft. 5th wheel

I currently have a 35 ft. f/w and have no problems finding camp sites. We are currently looking at purchasing a new f/w that is 40 ft. long. Has any one encountered problems with campgrounds not accepting units this long? Thanks in advance

  • You will be limited to larger campgrounds. But so far I have not had an issue finding a decent campground that can accomodate me. But I think I would have issues with more state and federal campgrounds at 40'
  • Where you will have problems is in the older campgrounds. When they were built, RVs were not so large. So you just have to ask before you go to a new place.

Look for places that note that they are BIG RIG FRIENDLY or BIG RIGS WELCOME.

  • Like all above said.. no issues here either.. BUT - - we do not go off the grid , and with the exception of the Delaware State park normally stay in private campgrounds..

When booking at a new campground , I usually ask about the roads to and from , and the interior roads. It also pays to look on line and see if they claim to be Big Rig Friendly... Go For It !! Joe
  • We have a 40 footer. Most small campgrounds we have to unload the toys before pulling in. Sometimes we are able to open the rear ramp and with the supports we can sit in garage during raining days.
  • Should be able to get into most, if not all, the spaces you were in before. We camp with a family who has a 40. Many USFS camps have a 20 foot max atleast in Oregon. But you can't go there now so no loss. Best of luck
  • We have hsd zero issues with state parks in Alabama or Georgia as well as COE's. Some park rosds are a little tight but have always found a spot. Good luck and happy camping.
  • It is not so much a campground not willing to take your money and accept you, it is the ability to get it parked without damage to the rv in a lot of smaller am and pa style campgrounds.

When you start getting into that are it becomes tougher to find a spot to get parked. The campground I often stay at had 4 sites that can fit a 40 footer or more, two are taken by seasonal and two are for over nighters. These same spots are used by the 35 foot guys so yes you could get turned away from a campground like that but would think it would be rare.
