Personally I try to avoid being over 1200° if I can help it. I have hit that a few times when I wasn't paying attention, but it's not something I do on a regular basis. Some people have said not over 1400°, but that just seems to be pushing it too much for me. Generally dropping a gear and increasing the RPM will get the temps back down.
