Hmmmm - "Worked great" - if so, why did you need/want the automatic cord reel?
No dog in the fight - I believe the automatic cord reel (and more flexible cord) is the best -and most functional- item since holding tanks!..:C
Pull out the necessary amount of cord - push button when it's time to retract cord..:C
You can (if you so desire) take the set-up to your next RV.
It's the gift (to yourself) that keeps on giving!
Drawback to the tubs, milk crates, etc. - is you are still "wrestling the anaconda" - and/or dragging/lifting same...:(
