I have done the whole circuit with the tailgate issue. Started by just taking off my stock tailgate. No difference in fuel usage but it was easy to hook up.
Then went with rear mounted "V" tool box. No difference in fuel usage and still easy to hook up. Kept "V" tool box but put stock tailgate back on. No difference in fuel usage and a pain to hook up.
Sold "V" mounted tool box and replaced tailgate with Stromberg vented "V" tailgate (light weight plastic). No difference in fuel usage but easy to hook up.
Keeping Stromberg tailgate and have added bed cover. So far I haven't noticed any difference in fuel usage while not towing with this combination either.
