5th wheel and tonneau cover

Am pondering buying our first 5th wheel.

A concern is whether or not I would have to remove my "BakFlip G2" tonneau cover to accommodate the 5th wheel hitch in the 6' p/u bed. The BakFlip has 4 approx 18" sections that fold back on themselves and the last section nearest the truck folds up against the back window and anchors with a bracket on each side.

Wondering if others have kept their folding tonneau cover on their trucks by folding it out of the way successfully or if they just removed it because it was a hassle. I want to have my cover when we are camped and doing our day trips to be able to store stuff safely and out of the weather.
  • I had an Extang Encore, similar to the Fold-a-cover below. Really liked it and the ability to get access to front of box. Only problem with it is, when panels are folder forward so rear of box is available, it adds about 3" to the top of the box, thus if you have 6" clearance to the bottom of trailer and making a sharp turn, you need to be very careful as you now only have 3" clearance. That is were I think the Bakflip is better as the panels are vertical along the back window. Yes, blocks your view out the rear window, but no clearance issue.

I have the exact same cover on my 2008 Super Duty and I fold the back 2 sections to expose the hitch and everything hooks up fine. Nothing rubs or interferes with hitch operation or articulation.
  • I'm thinking I'll need to get a Tri-fold. I really like my Truxedo LoPro QT, but the frame extends 1" above and 3" inward. I'm betting it would interfere or get rubbed.
  • I just put a Trucedo Duece on our truck Friday. It's a roll up that also opens back at the front to access the tool box.Looks and works good.
  • I ran a 4-section fold back on a long bed for years (until son of mine who shall remain nameless dumped some concrete blocks on it off of a fork lift) and ran with two sections extended while towing.

It was easier to see the hitch with all three of the rear sections stacked at the front of the bed, but there was never any problem once I was hooked up.

I now have a Pace Edwards retractable cover which my son gave me as a Christmas present. I don't know what made him think of such a nice present.

I have used the hard folding panels with the 5th wheel and it worked great. Everything folded up just behind the truck rear window and snapped in place. I also have a tool box in this area as well...

This is called the FOLD-A-COVER G4 ELITE

I too like to cover my entire truck bed when unhooked from the trailer...

All locks down for me with my setup... Pretty good weather seal wise as well...

You can get pretty fancy with a fifth wheel setup with additional tool boxes etc as long as they all do not extend up above the bed rails like this google image shows...

  • Mine is a roll up too. It works great for me! The only problem I could see, is if your hitch handle pointed upwards too far for the cover, when closed. It depends on the hitch, my handle is fine.

  • I have a roll up tonneau but yours should be the same, the cover is at or near the bed rail and the top of the hitch will sit below the rail. At least mine does.
