5th wheel jack issues

I have a 30' Ragen TH with a pin weight of around 2500 lbs. I'm posting here because it's more active than the TH forum.
The previous owner just replaced the non motor jack as it was inop, not raising or lowering.
When raising or lowering the motor seems to really be straining moving up or even down and moves painfully slow. It will skip a gear occasionally with a clicking and popping noise.
When I lowered it way down to level it, the jack wouldn't lift it back up so I had to hand crank it. When cranking it didn't turn hard and I didn't detect any binding or sticking points.
The gear box looks newer and I thought the owner said the motor had been replaced, but you know how that goes.
The motor is a Venture M-9000 PK which seems to be pretty common and around $130.
It's a very simple swap but don't want to throw unneeded parts at it.
Does this sound like a bad motor and worth the $ to replace it?
Also, has anyone converted to the dual motor jacks like the Bulldog? About $500 but they look like a pretty good set up.
  • I would check the electrical connections for corrosion and being lose. Also make sure the batteries are charged good before you spent any money on it.
  • Any questions, don't hesitate to ask. PM if you want, but not necessary. I am a bit of a Bulldog fanboy though. :)
  • Thanks for the replies.
Hate to replace junk with junk so I'm investigating the Bulldog dual motor system.
  • The occasional pop makes it sound like a broken tooth on the crown gear (inside the top cap of the leg housing) and not the motor.

Slow and straining sounds like motor.

Put them together and you may very well be better off replacing rather than repairing.
  • Personally I wouldn't put good money after bad. The Venture system is a cheaply made system and may work okay for lightweight 5th wheels but doesn't have the power or stamina for heavy pin weights.

I replaced the Venture legs/motor with the Bulldog setup. The two systems are worlds apart as far as reliability, and power. Our Venture was less than 5 years old, hadn't been used all that much and was toast. We replaced it because it was so slow you almost had to chalk the legs to see if they were moving. That plastic gearbox is a joke. The whole thing just screams "Cheap and Flimsy".

The Bulldog has two switches so it is easy to level the legs when first setting up. But that is just icing on the cake. We have a 3,000 lb. pin weight and the Bulldog motors are almost silent in operation with no sign they are struggling in the least.

I love it, and would do it again in a heartbeat. It is what these heavy pin 5th wheels should come with from the factory.
  • Venture got me everything I needed to convert to dual motor. I added up limit switches and heavy duty reversing relays. I am so happy with the swap.
