7-pin wiring

I am switching from a truck camper to a Heartland Sundance XLT 245. I plan on using the plug location I had installed in the bed of my truck by Lance, but it is in front of the wheel well as opposed to the rear.

I do not think this will matter, but will the plug being in front of the wheel well cause any issues while towing as opposed to behind?

I plan to use this location as all of the wiring is already brought up there (minus the brake controller wire) including fused 8-ga from the battery to charge. I just need to run the brake controller wire and change out Lance's 6-pin plug to a standard 7-pin.

Thanks in advance.

  • As long as umbilical cord is right length and doesn't get caught on anything when making turns use whatever plug arrangement you want.
  • Different strokes for different folks. I plug in the 5th wheel while I'm backing under it during the hitching process with the tailgate down. When the kingpin gets over the tailgate, I stop and plug in the 5th wheel's umbilical to the plug mounted behind the driver's side wheel well - I reverse the procedure when unhitching. I really wouldn't relish the thought of climbing over the bedside trying to hook up a front-mounted plug with the 5th wheel already hitched up, but to each his own....

Me,too. My 6 Chevys came with the optional "fifth wheel" wiring in the front. This year, my 2015 Chevy came with the wiring in the back---not as easy as in the front.

Be sure to check out ETRAILER.COM for all of your trailer connector needs. They also have a ton of install info on their site... Might give you some good ideas on what to do...

  • I had my plug in the box just ahead of the wheel well for last 20 years. It worked great. Had the idea to mount behind wheel well in March when I traded
trucks and it is not good as the hooked up trailer blocks good access to the plug. Randu
  • It will be less convenient for you to plug/unplug, but should not be a problem while towing.
