Aalert for Illinois 5th Wheel owners

If your 5th wheel is over 10,000 lbs you need a Class A driver license and you must have a safety sticker for you pickup truck. My friend just got a stopped for not having a safety sticker and when the officer found out he did not have a class A license he received a ticket for not having the correct license and could not drive the unit away. There was a storage area a few blocks away from the place where he was stopped and the officer followed them over to the place where he had to leave the 5th wheel. He also got a warning ticket for not having a safety sticker.

just curious, what does the "safety sticker" cover and what do they inspect/require

  • You don't need a CDL but a none commercial Class A. The PU was a 4 door dually Ford. The safety sticker was required because of the weight of the 5th wheel.
  • I'll bet he was towing with a commercial vehicle. Like a work PU truck?

Where I work when we run towing tests we are considered commercial vehicles and must have a CDL, logbook, etc.
  • Beginning to see rumblings of other states with similar restrictions for larger 5th wheels (weight).

Also have seen where the police officer was wrong and no CDL was needed for a private RV.
  • holy cow batman, that sure sounds like a rip.

Living in IL I been ripped before, but I gotta look into that one.

I got a CDL now but was gonna let that go by the wayside.

Guess I have to look at the economics of this one.

One thing for sure ole Jessie White will be looking out for my safety. :S
