I have had two brands. A Reese 16K round tube slider and a B&W turnover ball with Companion. I always kept some weight on the plate as I backed into the jaws. The Reese hitch lock could be closed and the lock put in place without the jaw being completely secure. The B&W was locked if you could insert the pin.. You would have to purposely high hitch the B&W or not install the pin for a failure. I once got distracted and forgot to install the lock pin, I pulled the trailer about 70 miles before discovering the lock pin on the B&W was not in place.
I have done this also with my Reese twin Jaw, then drove down a very bumpy county road to a weigh station. It is not going to open, pressure of the pin forces the jaws shut.
