Allowing my SO to take our unit for the weekend ?

In order of preference:
- Stay at a nearby park and do a day visit. You get to enjoy fridaynight and saturday day before the hassle of dealing with these people.
- Show up early, set up and then shrug when they show up late.
- Suck it up and keep your wife happy by doing the driving.
