Don't know about Andersen's install instructions, but do know that B&W says no bed mats between.

Andersen provided me the rubber mat because the hitch was wearing the spray in bed liner. When I say "wearing" I mean more like smashing the texture.
My understanding was that MOST sprayed bed liners were OK, to set hitch on, after drying period of course. I would rather have texture crushed, than to have bed dents, but that's just me.

Personally, I am not a fan of any brand single point hitch attachment, but many are happy with it.
