I towed for the 3rd trip with my Andersen Ultimate aluminum hitch. Nobody died, nothing broke, nothing came unhooked, nobody twisted, turned or pulled my unlocked handle...must be an anomoly... ...

Maybe you could set a cheap laser level on the bed rail projecting a vertical beam through the ball. When you see the beam lined up with the socket on the adapter you're there. A strip of reflective tape on the adapter might really light up.
