I think you are limiting yourself to much on trailer weight. While I see your logic there is no reason you couldn't pull up to 6500 lbs. with a half ton. I used to pull a 5500 lb TT with an Expedition. Truck had 3.31 gears and did a fine job.
I would say expand your search criteria a bit and see what's out there. The newer trucks are much more capable than just a few years ago.
