I've seen a few unbalanced TT tires during our travels. It's a nasty sight. The driver in the TV never sees or knows about the chaos going on behind him/her. The tire is bouncing wildly, stressing the entire axle in every direction. Can you imagine the wear & tear, and damage, even after a few hundred miles?
On occasion we hear about folks who find broken hangers and leaf springs on their TTs. Wouldn't surprise me if the root cause of some of these failures were due to unbalanced tires.
I glance at my unbalanced trailer tires in my towing mirrors every few minutes out of habit, and I've yet to see them do anything but spin smoothly.
I can see my tires, too, but you can still get quite a bit of vibration without any visible tire movement. IMO, by the time you "see" any vibration it's dangerously out of balance.
Whether one should balance their TT tires is a personal decision. Everyone's gotta do what makes them feel comfortable. Folks drive their cars without repacking wheel bearings 10-15 years. However, for some reason we hear about TT bearing failures if they aren't repacked every 12 mo. Most would never consider driving a car or truck without having their tires balanced. However, for some reason we hear it's not necessary on a TT where tires are notorious for failing at a high rate :h
