That is the problem in a nut shell, to bring the units “up to standard” they would cost considerably more money so the average person would not buy them. One manufacturer has come up with a novel approach to this, CUSTOMER SERVICE! Grand Design is one of the better manufacturers, but still has issues. But unlike other manufacturers they stand by their products, and provide world class customer service on their rigs. They have grown, from a small start up to a major player in the RV industry in only a couple of years using this model!
The fallacy of this is that it still costs money to provide such top-notch customer service. Can you imagine if they took the money they spend on all the overhead to provide that level of CS and put it into building a better product? How many "extra" employees do they have? How much "extra" inventory do they have to stock? How many "extra" phone lines to they pay for to handle the CS calls? How much "extra" do they spend in having to ship parts that might not be needed with a better-built product? I've said for a long time that if the mfrs would spend an extra $500 on the build side of each unit, they's probably save, overall, $1,500 in warranty work.
