I don't like the idea of just being on the jacks so I always block to get close (I only have 4 jacks for a 35' 5th wheel so it just doesn't seem like enough). I've read on the forums that it isn't best (different than the answers you're getting today). I've never heard anything official.
For my house, I built a small block that is the height for where I park and I roll onto it and then I'm pretty much level before I even start with the auto-level. I use auto-level basically to ground the jacks. The block is stored in the house as it is only useful at the house given the slope of the drive/road/etc.
