I think most fifth wheel trailers by most manufacturers have springs (and undercarriages) that are less than adequate. Notice I said "most." I've upgraded mine from five to six leaves, seven if you count the little short thing on the bottom of the stack.
As to the Alaska Highway, I drove it in '07 pulling a travel trailer with a 3/4 ton truck and in '11 pulling my current fiver with my current 1-ton dually. The road is hard on the equipment. There is no denying it. Equally as bad, though, was the Trans-Canada Highway between Calgary and Montreal. We have some roads in the States that are pretty bad, too.
Unless you know the specs and the exact circumstance I don't see how you can fault anyone who says they had a problem with his or her equipment. :)
