backup camera placement

I finally got my wireless backup camera (www.4ucam.com) wired up and working for the rear of the trailer.. still have to get the hitch cam done (and the wireless camera select switch)

the camera is one of the license plate type, so its about 4ft off the ground. I can't see any of the trailer body, (and it has no bumper)
so its a little hard to get oriented.

here is a pic where I am about 15 ft from the fence between the main property and our back field.

is it better to have the camera up higher?

The ladder is offset to the drivers side, but the placement still allows a real good view of what is behind and the few feet of offset does not seem to matter. I ran the cord along the ladder and attached with zip ties, (gotta love zip ties), the under the camper to the front pin box. My camera also has a disconnect at about 4' so I can easily remove the camera when not in use.
I took time to run the black cord staight and smooth and with right angles when needed, so it's not hid but does not look near as bad as my peeling decals.
I also have my camera wired so I can use it going down the road, not just in reverse.

Virtual identical application on my 5th. I use mine all the time to monitor the swivel wheel and bike when attached.

is your ladder centered on the rear?

I have this big white fiberglass tail, and no place to hide a black cord.

  • I replaced one of my lights on the top edge with my camera. I always drive with my lights on anyway, so I used the power to the light for the camera.
  • FWIW, the couple people I've talked to that have cameras on the rear, put them at the top of the rear window or next to a clearance light at the top edge. Gives a wider field of view from higher up...so they said. One of them actually has 3 cameras; one on each side of his FW, right behind the step looking back and the high-center one on the back end. Big, big FW, with tandem dual axles, pulled by an SportChassis Freightliner. IIRC, he was using about a 10" screen with 3-way split.
