Bed cover while towing 5er

I have a roll-up tonneau bed cover that I use whenever I'm not towing. When towing the 5er I keep the cover rolled up. Has anyone come up with a way to cover the area in front of the hitch while towing? The wind coming down from the nose of the 5er lifts things out of the bed unless they are pretty heavy.
  • I have a rollup cover - considering cutting a flap over the 5er hitch and sewing velcro on 3 sides - flip the porthole cover up to hitch up while the cover is in place, flip the cover back down for non-towing.
  • X2 on the Retrax Pro. Works great and locks at ANY point along the box. The only downside is you lose a bit of space in the front of the box for the roll up. For 5er, probably matches up best with an 8' box.

I use the Retrax Pro roll-up bed cover. When towing I have it retracted to cover the bed area in front of the hitch. Works well for my application and it can be secured in any position.
  • I feel your pain. When I had a roll up I tried everything I could think of to do what you suggest. Nothing I tried worked. When I traded the truck I got a Tonno Pro tri fold for a reasonable price, and have been very happy with it. Nothing under the cover moves while towing.

When I was towing my 5er I had a tool box between the hitch and the front of the bed. Looked similar to this google photo...

Then I had the FOLD-A-COVER hard folding bed cover that folded up on top of the tool box... Everything cleared with the trailer hooked up.

Looked like this google photo with the fold-a-cover folded up.

When folded down it looks like this google photo... The front folding panel folds back to allow access to the tool box...

Have been using the FOLD-A-COVER for the past two trucks now... I don't tow the fifth wheel anymore but still have the fold-a-cover installed. Locks up great and good place to keep things safe...

  • I use notched Custom Flo tail gates in my trucks for GN/5th wheel trailers to help eliminate air turbulence in my truck beds and ease of hooking up and un hooking.
  • Thanks for the replies. I probably should have mentioned that I prefer not to switch to another type of bed cover right now. My roll-up has velcro along the edges to secure it, but if partially unrolled in front of the hitch the velcro would be the only thing holding the cover in place. I'm concerned that it would not be strong enough to withstand the wind.

Bombfixer, how do you attach the netting to the truck?
  • I have a trifold tonneau cover on my tow vehicle. When I am towing the 5er, I fold the cover back to expose the hitch. There is still 1/3 of the cover over the bed where I can stow things out of the weather. I also use a bungee type net to secure the cargo..
  • If you have an 8 foot bed, The Extang Tri fold will keep the front part covered when towing. There are other brand tri fold or roll top covers that should also work. If short bed then hard type roll up cover may be your only option.
  • Replace the soft rolling cover with a hard folding one. We have been using Fold A Cover for quite a while. When in the folded position the front 1/4 of the bed is covered. When not towing it is closed up tight and locked semi secure and stuff is away from prying eyes.
