BF Goodrick Tire Failure

I had a Left Rear tire failure on my F250 last weekend while towing by fifth wheel. It did almost $4000 of damage to the side of the bed. I've never had a blowout before, and hopefully never will again. The tire was 64 months old, inflated to 72 PSI, and had less than 38000 miles on it. Size LT265 75 16 Load Range E

Have other had similar issues with BFG Rugged Trails? What tire do you recommend? I'm thinking of going to Michelin LT2, load range E.

  • 72 psi Seems kind of low for a load range "E" tire. I run mine at 80 psi. :)
  • What's your scaled actual rear axle weight. Besides possibly underinflated were these tires part of the BFG recall from a few years ago?
  • Please don't think I'm bashing or nitpicking, but want to ask you some questions so we can understand the failure.

    1. Most manufacturers recommend replacing a tire at five years. Yours was just a little over that based on your post. What was the actual four digit manufacturing date on the tire? Even though you may not have a ton of miles on it and the tread may be in good shape, the carcass may have failed due to age.

    2. You say your were running 72psi in your load range E tire? Did you know the actual weight the tire was carrying in the position it was mounted? Did you adjust the pressure based on this weight, and if so what table did you use? Why not inflate the tire to 80psi when cold which would have give you the maximum weight capacity of the tire?

    3. Had the tire ever been repaired? If so, it could have been a contributing factor to the failure.

    4. Was it the left rear or right rear tire? The reason I ask is that the right rear typically bumbs more curbs during its lifetime than the left rear.

  • This was my third set on the 250 and never had any problems with the other ones, but never again.
  • I did. I had Rugged Trail T/As on my F350 work truck. Great tire regarding both looks and performance. Traction was really good and when we had some snow storms (I do snow plowing), they did great. 285-70-17 E rated.

But when I looked at Discount Tire's reviews, I did see more than usual amount of people had issues with keeping them balanced. I just got them anyway.

After about 10,000 miles or so, I had rotated them (not the first time), and after doing so, I had a vibration up front. Not sure why but I had them balanced again and they were fine. It could have just thrown a weight or something. But then one day coming home from work doing about 70 mph pulling my landscape trailer, the front started vibrating like crazy. It was as if something was broke on the truck or something. This was at probably less than 20,000 miles. I made it home and inspected everything and finally came to the conclusion it must have been the tire. Took it to Discount Tire and the opinion was it broke a belt or something inside the tire. You couldn't see anything wrong but it vibrated so bad, I feared even if I decided to leave it alone, it might break something on the truck.

I bought a set of All/Terrain T/A KO2s and that was that. I didn't pursue anything with BFG or Discount. I just figured it was bad luck but I always remembered about how many people had balancing problems with these tires. They're great performing tires but I won't get them again.
