Black Streaks

I know we all know how to get rid of black streaks on our rigs, but how do we stop them from coming back. Does anyone have the answer???
  • Is this why so many new rvs are dark colors? We know the dark colors will absorb more heat from the sun and we think that black a/c shrouds will degrade more rapidly.

Yup. I get the same black streaks on the gutters of my house.
  • Thanks for the replies, I would get a lot of black streaks off the back of the 5th/w. The back of the unit is fiber glass and it goes over the top about 12" an the rubber roof meets On the fiberglass part I put a piece of J molding that you use when they do vinyl siding i put it down with heavy duty double stick tape now no more streaks down the back of the unit. The J molding passage the edge of the side about 3" on each side.
  • When you clean the roof make sure you clean out the gutters, any dirt in them will cause black marks down the sides. Any good car wash & wax will be ok. I have used Turtle wash & wax for years on all my trailers with good results.

  • Those are caused by the ablative white roof coating washing off during rain, etc. They're just a part of having an EDPM roof. You can clean the roof with blue Dawn or something much more expensive that's formulated for EDPM, but the coating will continue to do what it's supposed to do and more streaks will come. The more you clean the roof though, the more of that coating you'll wear off. Once you start seeing the black rubber membrane part that's under it, you'll have to get a new roof.
