Black tank flusher

My flusher connection has a label saying the black tank dump valve has to be open when using the flusher. I have been closing it with the flush turned on in order to get some water in the tank, and then I open the valve to get more water moving. AS long as I don't completely fill the black tank and burst it, am I in any danger with what I am doing?

Also, once it is clean, I run the flush for about 3 minutes to preload the black tank with water. Okay?

I run water in for 4 minutes twice as part of my weekly snowbird flushing process. Just do not get distracted. Chris

I do the same with 6 minutes each time.

I also add one minutes worth of water at the end.

I set the timer on my phone. It's too easy to get distracted.

Don't think the geyser shooting from the roof vent would be pretty!
  • I saw what happened to a motor home when the black flush was turned on by another person that was repairing the 4 faucet's for the 2 rv sites. the MH was a total loss and was to never be used again by law. Of course having the hose connect to the turned off faucet and connected to the black flush connection didn't make much common sense to me. I still see others keep a hose connected to theirs and can't see why I comment of their set up.

  • If your RV is equipped with a black tank flushing system you should find out the brand and follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to use the system, and follow them. With mine the head rotates as it sprays, cleaning the entire inside of the tank. You open the drain valve and turn on the sprayer and it does all the work for you, with out having to repeatedly open and close the drain valve. That might be a preferred way to do it if you don't have a rotating sprayer installed.
  • Every manufacturer will say to leave the valve open…..CYA.

By filling the tank and then letting the black tank valve open it's like the tide going out then it's a rinse with the sprayers then repeat then add about 5 gallons at the end.

I also travel with a clean tank with 5 gallons in it.

Also close the grey tank valve the day before travel then dump when setting up camp.

Using this method for over two years full timing the tank is spotless.

I too use the closed valve method, but I advise people don't get distracted , reason for the warning on leaving the valve open, probably more to CYA then anyone. I too use the same method, but not being able to see in inside the tanks, I can't claim they are spotless , they do appear to run clean when flushed out.
  • Mine work fine with dumping first and then do the flush spray. I have a transparent piece on my dump and I run the flush til it's clear water. Works great! I even removed the pot so I could change the seat and there was zero smell coming from the tank. Craig
  • Moved to new park last week. As I was getting everything hooked up the wife was talking to me about something. Anyway, got all squared away and jumped in the truck to go get some things at HEB. Decided that since it was handy now would use the restroom. Shut off the truck and went inside. Hmm no flush on the toilet. Hmm no water at the tap. Then it hit me -- had the hose on the black tank flush. Lessons learned: 1). Never pay attention to the wife -- especially when setting up. 2). Don't let her give you any trouble about extra trips to the john.
  • Well I will probably get flamed for this, oh well. I open the black tank valve and drain the tank. I then close and turn on the flusher. I let it fill the tank until I can't hear the water spray in the tank any more. This usually takes about 5-6 minutes. I will then open the valve again and watch till the tank runs clear. Then shut the valve and let the sprayer run for a minute. Turn off sprayer and it is good to go. Flame away!
  • I too use this method of cleaning the black tank but now with much more attention to what I am doing and do not allow myself to get distracted. Several years ago I got distracted and left the hose running way too long. I heard the black tank crack before I could turn off the hose. That little distraction event cost me a black tank replacement and $750. I've learned my lesson the hard way!

I do the same thing but I even let it run longer. Those rotating head style flushers don't push much water at all. I'm guessing I could probably go 20 minutes without overflowing, I'd be willing to try it on someone else's rig as a test, just email me.
