Black tank problem

HELP!! I recently bought a used 5th wheel and the previous owner evidently either didn't dump and clean his black tank after last use or had it on a seasonal site and left his black tank valve open and there is a considerable build-up of dried solid waste, approximately 1/2 of 45 gallon tank. Has anyone experienced this before? How did you correct the issue?
  • I agree with the Rid-X treatment. While it's soaking, take a 3/8 or 1/2 length of PVC and poke it down the toilet once a day to help break things up.

Get some Rid-X liquid and add double the label rate to the tank. May take a few dumps. Good to drive the unit around to slosh the solution around.

Worst case you can get a plumber with a snake to send the cable through the head and the drain.

X2 once you have let it set a week or so dump a couple bags of ice in the tank before the drive stop and go bumpy road.
  • If it was that badly neglected and was me I would invest in a proffessional black tank cleaning company, they have the equipment that will get that tank spic and span clean in an Hour....
  • I live in the country. If you do you could just run a garden hose up there and let run and move it back and forth now and then. But first thing is to fill and let it soak.

  • I would fill the black tank with water and some strong detergent and let it soak for couple of weeks to see if it would loosen it up. If he didn't take care of the black tank wonder how he took care of the rest of the RV.
