BLM Opens So Cal Riding Spots

Today the Ridgecrest BLM office opened the previously closed areas at Jawbone Canyon and Dove Springs effective immediately.

We’re out here now and it’s still pretty nice. The wildflowers are almost gone already, but the brush is still nice and green.

The temps aren’t too high, but it’s supposed to blow pretty hard tonight, so drive safely.

It’s nice to get a little riding in before the end of the season.

We got pretty hot, but then it was hotter when we got home. Go figure. :B

Yea, I left about 10:30 Monday, was 81. Got to Burbank at 1:00 and it was 87. Weatherman was spot on though. Said it would be windy Friday, it definietly was, then lay down and nice Saturday and Sunday. Was warm riding, worked up a sweat and it was hot when you stopped but overall very pleasant Memorial Day weekend in the des. I've only been out there a couple of times this late in the year and this was the nicest. Unless they put on the RUTS race 6.13/14 I'm done with the desert until late fall.
  • Cal City opened 5/18. We parked in Cal City morning of 5/20. Took a ride Thursday into the El Paso mountains, around Red Rock Can, thru Dove Springs to Jawbone and back around to Cal City - saw a few other people, not many. Friday took a ride R5 -> 50 (they are open), R-44 past Randsburg, past X-15 site, around Red Mountain - near Cuddleback and back to Cal City - saw a few people. Left Saturday AM, it was getting really busy by the time we left Saturday.

  • One weird quirk is that the State land is still only open for day use. The problem with this is that the State/Fed boundaries are an unmarked checkerboard of squares. There's no way to know you're on State land until Mr. Ranger pulls up and tells you to put down your cocktail, douse out the fire, and move to a different spot.

    Only in California... :R
  • Camped out by Spangler 2 weeks ago, it was incredible, so green everywhere. Lots of rigs out there and Randsberg general store was serving through the doorway and The Joint was selling beer but you had to drink in the "park"....LEO drove and just looked the other way.
  • Isn't is nice that some un-elected bureaucrat is giving us access to what already belongs to us?
