It is a little bit old-fashioned thinking IMO. All current fifthwheels have some kind of equalizer connection between front and rear springs, which improves the ride as well as equalizing weight on each axle. You still can have some imbalance due to a change in center of gravity, but you would have to be grossly out of level front to back for that to make a significant difference on tire life. You want to tow level, but for reasons other than tire wear.
You can still be very much out of balance left to right, which can be a result of floor plan and appliance layout, or simply how you loaded your stuff.
Having said that, it is a pretty common recommendation here on RV.net to weight each individual wheel at the scales. I personally don't do it, but I would do it if I was seeing tire wear or failure issues. Weighing them individually is how you know for sure.
