Blowing tires on 5th wheel

First I apologize if this subject has been cover in the past. I did a search and went back a bit and didn't see anything fairly recent

I'm starting to get very frustrated and its beginning to ruin my travel experiences. I own a Cedar Creek Silverback 5th wheel and have blown 4 or 5 tires on the thing with very little mileage. I went seasonal 3 years ago but before that I was weekend transient with a couple of week vacation trips thrown in. Here's the issue I'm having. Before I went seasonal most trips were under 2 hours on weekends. The weeks trips would be up to 300 miles one way. I did those types of trips about 7 times in a 4 year period. Of those 7 I blew tires 4 times. Very discouraging and started making me avoid longer trips completely. Then I went seasonal with the idea we would pull out once a year for vacation. Well that was last week. Didn't go to far, about 200 miles round trip and what happen? I blew a tire!!! Can anybody tell me the the heck is going on? Why am I blowing tire so frequently? I'm at the point where I don't want to take the rig anywhere now. Tire pressure and lugs are check before every trip. Wheels are greased yearly. I read somewhere a few years ago in a Good Sam's article that on the less expensive models the axles may not be aligned properly so tires are not running true and sort of dragging. Is there any truth to that. Do I need to get axles laser aligned? Very frustrated here and need to have a resolution to this problem before I go out on a long trips again. Is this a common problem on 5th wheels? Any help would be appreciated.

  • And were OFF. I think you're alignment idea is a good one. A large semi repair place is where I'd call first. Even a LtE tire can be overloaded so that is worth checking at a cat scale. May need to move up to a G. Trailer manufacturer are famous for putting on what barely works.
  • Most people having tire problems are , over loaded, tires under inflated, tires are too old or they are driving too fast. Many ST tires have a max speed of 65 mph stamped on them. I try to stay at about 60mph when towing. I run the max tire pressure stamped on the tires.

Two years ago I switched to Maxxis 8008 radial ST tires and have been pleased with them. Towed our 5er from south Florida to western Colorado, then to Utah, Arizona and back home with zero tire problems. People towing too fast with under inflated tires seem to have the most problems.
  • Tires are Electra 235/85 R16 HLT load rating E. I suspect its the proper tire,no?

Pressure is 80psi as rated trailer weight is approximately 12,000

2008 RV means your tires are 6 years old and sat 3 of those years... Hummm........ I wonder why you blew all 5?

Hmmmm....might want to learn how to read smart ass or at least comprehend I blew the original tires the first few years I owned the trailer and I never said it sat for 3 years I said I didn't go own long trips. But thanks for your help. Such a great community we have here..
  • I assume you have the OEM tires on your trailers. Investigate and upgrade all of your tires to LT rated tires.
Blown OEM tires is a common issue on RV trailers

  • If you're searching for alignment threads, search instead for "ST tires" and "LT tires" and "china bombs". And from those threads found you will find other search terms. You are not alone, and the answer is out there.

Meanwhile tell us what tire brand, model, and size you are running. And tell us how much your trailer weighs loaded and ready for camping.
  • What tires are you running? Brand/size.....

What axle weights do you have on trailer?
What is the tire load rating and what pressure are you running tires at?

    Blowing tires.....
    Overloaded/under inflated tires
    Tires marginal for axle load
Bad tires.....cheap tires/construction/type (cheap in design/materials not cost)

Alignment issues would show up in excessive thread wear patterns.
  • You've told us pretty much everything except the brand of tires.
  • Never blown an tire in 20 (plus) years of pulling a 5er.
Covered most of the western US and Canada in that time, of that hundreds of miles was on dirt roads.

I would certainly check to the alignment, and everything else again.
