Yeah people do the dumbest things and some even get by from doing so.
Std leaf spring suspension are held in place at the ends which keeps the axle in place. When one spring end...side link... hangers breaks this places strsses on the other end especially whem backing/turning corners or hiting a pot hole unless its chained in place.
In my former hauling business we see this time to time. One end of the axle will swing around under the trailers frame or the trailing axle. A big rig wrecker with a rotator is needed to raise the trailer with its load and get it off the highway.
Do it right and keep your speeds down should get you home
