Broken leaf spring

After coming into the campground the other day I noticed a sang on one side of our 5th/W. I found out I had a busted leaf spring an shackle. I was able to get a jack to raise it high enough to put a 2x4 between the frame an the axel. Question is can I drive home 175 mi at a slower speed an make it home.

  • No Problem. We did it last year with our 13k fifth wheel after a bearing failed and rim and tire went bye bye, never to be seen again. Went 150 miles in the middle of no where South Dakota on three wheels, with 2x4 between frame and spring pack. We went around 50mph no problem. LT Tires. We have the TST tire monitor. The single tire stayed around the same temperature as the other two.

Crawl under and look things over. Is anything going to rub? Is anything going to hit a tire and cause a blowout? If everything looks good to you, you can try it. I did it 2 years ago in my old 5er, the nearest place to get it fixed was a hundred miles down the road. The shop said next time to jack it up and put a 2x4 or 2x6 between the axle and the frame, just as you mentioned. When there is no suspension, they don't pop out. Honestly, I didn't even think about it.
  • If the board comes out it could easily injur or kill someone.
  • No way I would even consider it.

You will lose that 2x4 in the most remote location, during a driving rain storm.

I would not try that at any speed... As much as it may be a pain, I would find a place close to get it fixed and drive safely . .The first bounce will bounce that 2x4 right down the road
