Building a Bunk Ladder

I bought a 2000 Tahoe 21TB and love the trailer except my wife isn't fond of the fixed bed and the small ladder to get up to it. My question has anyone made a ladder out of wood to replace the aluminum one. She states that if it was twice as wide it would be easier to get in and out in the middle of the night. I can build it so if anyone has ideas or photos it would be appreciated.

I built a ladder and rails for the kids out of 1"x2"oak . I used a dado blade and table saw to cut groves for the rungs and a router to round over all the corners then stained to match the rest of the wood work. Didnt cost more than 50$ not including tools but looks beautiful and holds my 230 pounds no problem. I dont have pics at the moment because the trailer is in storage

I too built our ladder from 1X2 Alder and stained to match our interior. Installed metal (hook) brackets lined with soft side of Velcro at the top to prevent the ladder from kicking out. It hold my 330 plus pounds :E I'm not smart enough to post pictures here.
  • My Loved One is in bed before me, no idea how she gets there....

Opps, we have a master bedroom in our 5ver....I just fall into the queen bed, Goodnite!! :)
  • Thanks for the search I did one as well but didn't come up with as many as you did I will go through them.
  • I ran a search from 1 year ago and beyond for you. Results here.

There was some discussions a few years ago about this, our 05 Raptor came with a god awful aluminum ladder, and many folks had purchase or built their own. Hopefully some of those ideas and discussions are in that search.

  • What ever you make it out of, make sure that the rungs are wide enough and soft enough so that you/she can climb it in bare feet. A narrow rung really hurts the bare feet, unless she wears shoes to bed.
  • how tall is it? there are various lengths of wooden step ladders that you could use half of.
    bumpy
  • How about using a section from an extension ladder and cut it down to fit the height you need.

I see good extension ladders on Craigslist for under $50.
