A friend and I removed the cap, cut out and replaced the rotten wood, insulated the area(there was none) and replaced the cap.out of pocket less than $100. The only thing I would fear at this time is time. It's getting cold and you may want to leave soon. Or can you work on it inside? Mold, asbestos, lead, all stuff that only recently they found out can hurt you. Or maybe they knew and didn"t tell me. Worked with all that stuff and even mercury. Still kicking. If moldy buy a GOOD respirator, not a paper mask and have at it. Good Luck
Yes, this is all predicated on a ridicuously low price. I have a 35 x 16 x 16 high heated space to work on it.
My mind isn't made up, but part of me hates to pass up an ideal model for our use, assuming one small part needs repair and the rest is rather nice. I guess I needed to hear that folks have done similar things?
