I sanded the post down as mentioned by glazier and even scotch-brighted inside the hole then liberally greased them both up and it slid right in. I have it all put together now and ready to go.
I do dread the day I will need to get it out again though.

Glad you got it out. The downside to greasing the post and the base is that it will attract dirt. Better to use a dry lube. Since I use my truck for all sorts of stuff, dirt =will= get in the TO base and, once so far, I've had to crawl underneath and use a drift punch to drive it out.
