I did the same thing with cones and an empty parking lot when doing my Commercial Class-A. And yes, it's pretty much the same practical and pre-trip. I'll tell you from my experience, the pre-trip is the hard part. I was fortunate enough to have a really cool guy when I did my pre-trip part. If I missed something he'd ask, "Is there anything in this area you'd like to check?"

Definitely download the Commercial Handbook from the CA DMV website. It has detailed information on the pre-trip and driving practical AND how to practice for the practical.
