4400 lb axles are a rarity, thus harder to find parts and more expensive. They have 10 in brakes which are marginal... same size as 3500lb axles with no options listed.
5200 lb axles are more common and parts more readily available. 5200 lb axles have 12 in brakes with more options available such as self adjusting brakes, hydraulic drum or hydraulic disc if one wants to upgrade. A 5200lb axle with hydraulic disc brakes cost less then $300 each when I got my quote this fall.
I upped my last trailer from 2800lb axles to 3500lb axles and my new ones warranty is off in the spring so it will have 5200 lb axles with disc brakes come spring.
