Can't access front storage when hooked up to long bed truck.

We can't get into our front storage when hooked up. This is where the batteries are located plus hydraulics. Is this a huge issue? Is a slider hitch our only solution? What problems could come up?

Our first 5er was a 86 King of the Road 28', if only cleared the rear bumper by about 6" to 8" or so it seemed. When we first pulled it thought we would hit the 5er at the 1st turn! Well when we picked it up it was on a dead end street and needed to do a jack knife back into a driveway the crank around hard the other way no contact.

Our current 5er I can easily walk between the TV and 5er.
  • We can not access the front compartment of our Cedar Creek I believe it is due to the size of the door a split door would solve that problem. But in our case it is not necessary to access the compartment while hitched.
  • Is the compartment inaccessible due to the not enough swing room for the compartment door? My former Carriage and current Lifestyle has a split door to eliminate that possible issue. The upper door swings up and the lower one swings down. You may consider that.
  • When I had the flatbed installed on my 2014 Ram the Eby flatbed dealer told me the Ram rear end is 5" further rear than Ford and Chevy/GMC pickups.
  • If it is that tight I would be more concerned on making right left hand turns
  • Sig says 2010 Keystone Laredo 266RL.
That is rather odd as the bed length diff is usually forward of the rear wheels. The newer HD Rams do look like the wheels are back a little but that could be because of the way the bed side is contoured.
  • I also have a long bed and can access the front compartment of my 5vr when hooked up.

What positioning is hitch installed in truck bed?
Over rear axle, forward of rear axle

What type of pin box........medium/short would put rear of truck closer to front of 5vr

Change pin box .....no slider needed with long bed
  • Don't really have an answer for you, except that I have a long bed and am able to access my front storage. But I would think that it is a big issue. What kind of fifth wheel do you have?
