cargo hitch carrier

I am trying to find a solution to where to carry my portable generator. I do not have enough room in the bed of my truck to carry it there so I am considering buying a cargo hitch carrier. My Landmark has a class II hitch with a 1 1/4" receiver that is bolted and welded to the frame. I am not sure if this is strong enough to carry my 163LBS generator. I would have to use a adaptor to make the it work with the 2" cargo carrier. Anyone have a suggestion as to what to do?
  • Recently saw one that was welded onto the frame of a trailer. Pretty neat, was housed in a metal fence type box to thwart theft as well.

Weld a 2" receiver to one of the frame rails... on the side that needs more weight.
  • Another suggestion ...... put a 2" front receiver on your truck and a cargo rack. Generator and rack would add about 225 lbs to front axle. If you have a Ram TV then do not get the Curt receiver like I did. It is square and Rams have a curved lower valance. Had to cut 3" by 14" slots for each corner of hitch in plastic valance. PITA. Put generator in middle to not interfere with headlites and turnsignals.

Most Cargo carriers are rated for 500lbs so you are good to go there.

Here's a heads up as far as the 'adapter' to go from 1 1/4 inch to the 2 inch (that is standard on all cargo carriers).....

The only adapter I could find locally from a store was made by Reese. I had a Draw-tite on the vehicle. They don't play nice together. Reese made sure that the holes don't line up on anything not Reese equipment. :R

I was so angry about this. I took the Reese Adaptor to a frame shop and had them cut the end down so the holes lined up.
