Steel wheels need to be torqued and checked properly a couple of times every few hindered miles after installation, per manufacturers instructions. Aluminum rims are better and don't require as much checking after installation.
If you drove on one tire for a while, that tire was overloaded and damaged and that could be why it blew out later.
