Once again a trip to the scales is in order. The spare may have been underinflated, but would assume the repairman would have checked.
Actually it sounds like the tire that blew was the original tire that came off, not the spare.
As far the OP being upset about what the tire change guy said about the lug nuts being overtightened, he was most likely just putting down possible causes. And you'd definitely have to list that as a primary cause.
Well in rereading the OP, hard to say, for sure same location, but seeing how it took another driver to tell him he lost a tire, how would he know where to go look for it on the road side?
Maybe that is also part of the shortened story, the CT assistance guy, recovered it from the side of the road, or the side of someones vehicle!
