Does anyone know; Does a CB antenna have to be grounded for it to work. I am hooking up duel antenna but my mirrors are plastic. I am tired of putting it on the roof.
You should try HAM radio. It is superior to CB radio and much cleaner language than on the CB channels. This does not eliminate your antenna grounding needs though. LOL. You will be amazed at the distance you can communicate.
You might be able to find a lip-mount for your antennas.
to get a correct swr reading your antenna must be grounded.
but sad way to much plastic and that hurts. also where on your truck/car/rig/etc matters. as the body does influence how you can transmit and receive.
the duel trucker deal has a reason. must be 8-9 feet apart. and gives you a bis toward the front and rear of your rig. place in the center of your car roof and you get a almost perfect circle.
in a perfect world your mobil antenna should be grounded at its base. and your radio should be grounded..not just the power ground. both + and - feed lines should be direct from your battery. and both fused. way too much line interference from computers (in your car/truck/etc) to just gain your power from a quick source.
Another possibility is to attach a ground wire to back of CB itself (think there's a screw marked GND). Run the wire from CB to a screw somewheres under the dash where metal meets metal or near fuse block. On some semis, a wire is ran directly from CB to neg side of battery. Another option though you said you don't like or getting tired of putting ant on roof is to get a magnet mount w/ removable ant. K40 makes such a thing. My magnet mount hasn't been moved in 10+ years, but I just put on/take off ant as needed. When not in use, put cap on magnet base where ant attaches to it. But try either the other ant options mentioned or run a add'l ground wire.
Firestik sells NGP (No Ground Plane) antennae and you must also get their 18' dual coax ( 75 ohms ) designed to go with them. Get two of the tunable antennae, not fixed. Otherwise you might have to cut for length and that could go badly.
