you need to find out what the dot rules are for you state so ask a dot agent and i say ask them because dmv here don't know several of the dot's rules! i know in nebraska you don't need a special license for my f350 dually to pull my 295 wolf pack fifth so i don't and have never been pulled over nor had an accident. i have read a few post's in the last 4 pages about how the classifications are good to teach people how to pull safer....this is not a bad idea however giving dot anymore authority would be a bad thing and they have too much now imo.
i have seen many unsafe tv's, heck when i saw a ford escape pulling a 19' tt i just shook my head lol that escape just about popped a wheelie with every bump he hit and couldn't get over 45 mpg in a 60 mph zone, no load leveler. on my last trip to little sahara state park in oklahoma i saw a 80's dodge class c pulling a bumper hitch 2 horse stock tailer with 2 jet skii's on a trailer behind it!! on the interstate i have seen many 3/4 ton trucks squatting hard with way to large a fiver's on them. i think the general concences is, if it makes it to the destination it can pull it lol lol these people may kill themselves and/or others but you can't stop them or educate them because there mindset is , i'm only going 20 to 40 miles or it's not very far! and if the camper dealer or a shop installs the hitch they believe it's capable of towing anything! the last time i was shopping for my current fifth th'er the sales lady at the camper dealership asked me what i would be towing it with......i said a ford escort.....i just wanted to see if she could put a spin on that to go through with the sales pitch!! lol lol she couldn't btw she was speechless for a few seconds and then looked confused lol
