I'm with you. I've got about 8" and have =almost= hit. I do tow a bit nose-high and don't worry about it.

I have about 8 inches and need every bit.When I back into my driveway im pointed up the road at a steep grade and then jack knife the trailer into my flat driveway and for a few feet im about 1.5 inches or closer away from my truck rails due to the change in ground angles.You never know what kind of roads you may turn onto even by accident and having the larger clearance in my opinion is a good idea.

Per husky hitch manual:
Verify that the cross member is set at the proper height to provide a minimum of 6" clearance between the bottom of the trailer nose (pin box) and the top of the truck bedsides, and allows for a level-towing attitude of the 5th Wheel Trailer

At a minimum this should be 6”, if the trailer and tow vehicle are going off-road then this needs to be 8” to 10”.

Pin box design can be an issue too - was on a Montana I had. The back of the pin box was square - I had to cut off some to make an angle on the back so it would not hit the box of the truck. I did not know it was a problem until I took a sharp turn and put a dent in the side rail of my truck. Filled it in with RTV - painted with touch up paint and covered the bed rails with Bushwacker bed rail caps
Problem found when I went from a 2005 to 2011 chevy - box is about 3 inches higher on the 2007 and newer models.

My present trailer pin box is angled on the back.

When I ordered my Lifestyle with the 8K I.S. suspension and 17.5 tires, that increased the RV height by 3 1/2 inches. I also had 2 inch spacers installed with the I.S. I have 6 3/4 inch of clearance.

We had 6 inches of clearance when we had our 96 Dodge. When we bought out 2014 Ram, it was so much higher we had to lower our 5th wheel because of it. We now have 7 inches and are very happy. Hugs, Di

Some get by with 5" depending on the hitch flex.
