Colorado Springs area camping with OHV trails etc?

I'm barely settled but got "snowed in" today and started poking around looking for campgrounds for spring that have ATV OHV trails from the campground.

I found a few on hwy 24 past woodland park,(100 miles away-from Falcon) but was hoping to find some on "this side of the hill" so to speak..

Any of you Colorado Springs folks have any good spots I can scope out for early spring etc would be great.....

Tried my "Phoenix" hand at snow-mobiling my SxS Arctic cat....Was fun but WAY TOOOOOOO COLD for me right now..LOL

Rampart Range was also the place where some lethal booby traps were found last summer.

If you go there, be aware and careful, and be sure to report any additional nonsense going on you may see.

While living in CO, you must go experience Taylor Park for OHV. Upwards of 2k miles of trails with multiple trails that go over passes at high elevation...something for everyone. As already mentioned, definitely not a Spring location, more Summer into early Fall.
  • The two closest areas to you will probably be Rainbow Falls and the 700 Trails. I don't know of any campgrounds you can ride out of though. The campgrounds on 67 don't connect directly to the trails. The Rainbow falls area has some dry camping but with your rig it would be tough to get a spot. Also the 700 trails have a trail head out of Divide that has some boon docking spots. There are not that many of them though and turnaround with your rig would be challenging if you cannot find a spot. I have nearly the same rig.

Now for the good news. The riding at both of those areas is outstanding. The 700 trails are some of the best in Colorado in my opionion. If your in a sxs you will need to stay on the 300 series trails in the area as all the 700 series are 50 inch limited.

    My reccomendation:

The best place to go for starters is the Taryall area just east of the town of Lake George.

Take HWY 24 out of Woodland Park, through Divide and then Lake George, and keep on going past Round Mountain campground. Keep going and look for St. Rt. 31 on your right. Grid for the turnoff is: 39.031769, -105.447001. Then go a couple miles and just after the first cattle guard look for rds on the right or left and camp anywhere you like.

There are lots of large easy to access spots in that area. Here is a good one: 39.047236, -105.452231. There are lots of SXS and ATV trails from that area.

Please make sure you have the MUVM maps for the area since there has been a lot of new folks making their own trails in these areas. Colorado is more anti OHV then Arizona is so closure of areas are a real concern.

There are a lot of other great riding areas in Colorado. Taylor Park has been mentioned is Def worth checking out but that is a July to early Sept trip. Sooner or later and a lot of the trails will be closed due to snow.

One last request. Please consider joining COHVCO to help keep trails open in Colorado. http://www.cohvco.org/

PM me if your looking for more info and i would be happy to share what I know.

Moab is another great place to go. We are heading there over spring break. V/R Ty
  • There are some boondocking spots with access to ATV/OHV trails north out of Woodland park on HWY 67. I am sure that it gets polluted with people on the weekends. I was scouting out some 1 day riding around that area this past fall. Havent riden there yet but have tried to do some riding on Rampart range but really didnt like it.

We do alot of boondocking out of the Buena Vista area and it is pretty decent definitely gets really crowded but fairly easy access and about 110 miles or so to our camp spot.

Now one of the other great destinations is Lake City, its about 250 miles away. That trip we didnt take the Toy Haulers we just took utilty trailers and loaded the ATVs with all our gear stayed on the trail for 2 nights and rode about 130 miles and still didnt see everything. We rode over 2 passes twice Cinnamon pass and Engineer pass. Rode right down into the town of Silverton, they allow ATV/OHVs on the city streets with some restrictions, but all in all awesome 3 days of riding.
  • "Early spring" ATV riding in the mountains is troublesome - most of the trails are snowed in. We usually don't get the ATVs out until May, and that is still too early. The further West you go (higher elevations) the worse it gets.

Google Rampart Range, some good trails, but since it is so close to town, it will get busy. Not sure on the camping.
  • Thanks for the replys.

Glen, the wiffee got a promotion to Colorado springs( the resturant owner here bought out the Phoenix market)and here I am !!!!!!!!!!

Now I have to find camping spots here..:)

  • Taylor Park is a great area to ride, it's probably a couple of hours west of you. Went there last summer and had a blast, plan to go back this year.

Wanted to add that many years ago we went riding north of Highway 50 by the Royal Gorge, don't know if it is still open though. Also out side of La Veta we came across some ORV areas a couple of years back.
  • I live in Falcon also but do not have an ATV. Several friends do but they generally go west of Woodland Park. My neighbor also has an ATV but I think he goes south more. I think there are some down by Cuchara near Bear Lake. I have seen campers there with several ATVs on their trailers. The campground there has no hookups.
  • We'll be visiting in July and are also looking for suggestions or to meet up with locals.
