I use the TST on the truck and trailer. I have no issues with needing the repeater. The sensors require a tool to remove them, which deters theft. I'm sure a determined thief could get them off. The tire sensors are on all the time. To save batteries when I won't be using the trailer for a while, like winter storage, if you loosen the sensor, or remove it, it shuts them off.
As noted above, I turn the receiver on when doing the last minute packing and hooking up, and they are up and running before leaving.
I wouldn't think of towing without them now.
