Great pictures, and I would like to have the ability to do this sort of project. I only want to modify my dune buggy with a front wheel drive water cooled engine and drivetrain (mounted in the back of course) like a 150 HP Honda 2L accord engine in my 1,500 pound buggy!
Fred. - naytherExplorerI'm in concurrence with boogie on the pinion angle question and trailing arm issue. I assume you were careful in setting the pinion angles on the transfer case and rearends correct? That is critical.
- Golden_HVACExplorerHi,
What a wonderful project!
I have a equally talented friend that wanted a short as possible 1 ton pickup, and got a stolen and recovered F-250 to start his project (with no engine or bed on the truck). He mounted a 1960's 1/4 ton Econoline pickup onto that chassis, shortened the wheelbase by 22" and it is a cabover engine with a tilt cab! He also built a pair of fuel tanks - turns out they hold 65 gallons, and he runs that tank, then the standard 20 gallon in the back that has a gauge on it.
You have been equally resorceful in making this project come together. I probably would have been happy with a tag axle, that is simply dropped when you hitch up the trailer, pick it up when out 4 wheeling, and extended the pickup bed by a couple of feet. But you went all out, in a delux sort of way, and made something truely unique.
Great all around craftsmanship, and very talented, can do fiberglass, paint, and welding.
Fred. - boogie_4wheelExplorerSeruriti, from the pics it looks like you might have an issue with the differential making contact with the carrier bearing going to the 2nd. Maybe you don't get the truck in that rough of terrain, or it doesn't squat that much. Shoot, it would probably take 6k pounds to make the factory rear suspension squat that much. Just an observation.
Also, I second the u-joint angle from t-case 1 to t-case 2. A double-cardan joint would be a better choice at that location. The angle looks extreme in the picture.
I bet the rear wants to spin because of the suspension design. If the arms that are locating the axle were ahead of the axle then as the axle drove forward it would also be pushed downward. Since they are behind the axle, as you power the axle will want to lift.
Think of it like this... Sit in an office chair and push yourself backward with your feet, then try to pull yourself forward; your feet slide on the ground more. That's my theory anyway, or you don't have enough air in the bags :B - SecuritiExplorer
